Deafness After Mumps More Common Than Previously Thought

In an article from a Japanese report in the March issue of The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal, physicians mumps is endemic in Japan. They determined the incidence of sudden acquired deafness in children with mumps based upon a population-based office survey of more than 7500 patients. The overall incidence of deafness among children with confirmed mumps was 7 cases in 7400 children with hearing tests, or 0.1%, the authors report.
